This 1998 Ferrari 550 Maranello is finished in Argento Nurburgring and shows 66,850 km on the odometer. The 550 Maranello’s design is intended to be evocative of Ferrari’s greatest hits from the 1960s and 1970s while still providing outstanding aerodynamic efficiency and stability. With numerous cues from the 275 GTB and 365 GTB/4, the Maranello was a classic when it was first shown and has aged beautifully in the 27 years since. Although the basic architecture for the 550 Maranello was shared with the 4-Seat 456 GT, 100mm were cut from the wheelbase, and power increased significantly. The interior of the 550 Maranello is beautiful in its simplicity, and one of the last truly timeless interior designs from Ferrari before screens became an integral part of the experience. This example is fitted with a deep red-brown leather known as Pelle, accented with lighter brown carpeting throughout the cabin. A pair of nicely bolstered bucket seats are extremely comfortable for long-distance driving but will also hold you in place when the road gets twisty. In front of the driver, a 3-spoke steering wheel frames a simple gauge pod with a tachometer, speedometer, oil pressure, and water temperature- while three other gauges sit in a pod atop the dashboard to your right. Behind you is a sizable parcel shelf that is perfect for carrying overnight bags for a weekend away. Powering the 550 Maranello is a 5.5 liter V12 with dual overhead cams and 4-valves per cylinder rated at 478 horsepower and 419 lb-ft of torque. This engine is known to be one of the more dependable engines to come out of Ferrari and does not require engine out servicing like the mid-engine cars of the same time period. In all 550s, the only available gearbox is a 6-speed manual transaxle that sends power to the rear wheels. Starting with the 575M in 2002, the F1 gearbox became the almost universal choice for front-engine V12 Ferraris, making the 550 truly the end of the classic era of Ferrari. When a car combines timeless beauty and outstanding performance, you know that the car that results is bound to become a classic. Now that the 550 Maranello is more than 25 years old, it has achieved classic status but thanks to its modern technology, it can be used every day without worry.
