THE RESTORATIONTHE ERAMercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 "Red pig"
In the 1970s, the then tuning company AMG, named after its founders Hans Werner Aufrecht, Erhard Melcher and Aufrecht's birthplace Großaspach, was not yet a subsidiary and noble forge of Daimler AG. In 1970, Werner Aufrecht decided to build a race touring car capable of winning, the first ever in AMG's history, based on a Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 (model series: W 109). In addition to various chassis improvements and modifications to the body and interior, the engine was modified. Instead of the automatic transmission, a manual gearbox was used. The result was an impressive, beefy touring race car, equipped with a V8 cylinder with 6332 cm³, which soon received the nickname "Red Pig" in racing circles. The racing premiere took place at the 24-hour race in Spa-Francorchamps, where the AMG Mercedes-Benz caused quite a stir and sensationally took a class victory and 2nd place overall against strong competition. But the racing career in rallying lasted only a short time, the car slipped off the track a few weeks later in Hockenheim and was badly damaged. After reconstruction, it was used once again in the 24 Hours at the Nürburgring and then sold to the French armaments company Matra, where it was used for test drives in the development of aircraft tyres. There it was probably scrapped in the early 1990s.
